Cathy lives in Xxxxxxx, Xxxxxxxx, with her husband Paul Deceglie and their son Michael (fifteen). She began studying Chinese watercolors in 1982 and still finds watercolors on silk to be her favorite, though she now "dabbles" with acrylics. Spare time activities include hiking, canoeing and attending movies with her family.

2 Welcome Home  May 1999

Dear Readers,
Mother's Day is a major event around the Mothers At Home office. After all, the conviction that mothers are important is what has brought us here in the first place. In the office, we've compared how Mother's Day is celebrated in each of our homes, and of course, there's a wide variety of responses. For some of us, the day is very low-key, with only a construction paper card made at school to set the day apart. Other mothers are treated to breakfast in bed, gifts and dinners out. Some of our husbands throw themselves into helping their children honor the day, while others have a more hands-off attitude. Most of the mothers we know are content with the level of attention they receive--others are agitating for a little more recognition!

Whatever way you celebrate Mother's Day at your house, know that we at Mothers At Home appreciate your contributions to your family, your community and to our greater world. We understand that one day a year is hardly enough to thank mothers for their deep devotion and unrelenting efforts on behalf of the next generation. We know that "the hand that rocks the cradle" is a dedicated, but very tired, hand.

So, mother-to-mother, we wish you a very happy, enjoyable Mother's Day!

Rave Reviews for WH Recipes

envelopeI want to thank you for including a few tasty, simple recipes in your publication. I served the Stir Fried Broccoli and Tangy Apricot Chicken to my family, to rave reviews. Then, with company coming over and no time to pore over cookbooks for the perfect recipe as I did in my days before becoming a mother, I pulled out my most recent WH and served the Orange Almond Salad and Stir-Fried Broccoli (with grilled salmon). Again, more accolades for your recipes from everyone. We all agreed that the salad was so refreshing and delightful that it will be on all our menus come summertime.

I haven't tried the Sweet Potato Pie recipe yet, but you know I will. Again, thank you for one more way in which you support me in the work I do.

Knowing How to Help

envelopeYour January 1999 issue was particularly helpful to me because of the article "Immeasurable Grief." I have a friend, five months pregnant, who will be carrying to term a baby without a brain (at least, that is what the ultrasound shows). I want to be as helpful as I can be, and your article came at a good time. When I first received the issue I thought it was a good article, but one to be filed away. I am so saddened that it has relevance to my friend.

Keep up the good work. You don't realize what an influence you truly have. We homeschool because of your "Homeschooling Alternative" article. That was the first time I had ever heard of it, and after a great deal of additional research, here we are! We homeschool a second grader, first grader and our two-year-old.

Maureen Marcucci

Editor's note: The Homeschooling Alternative is available through the MAH office as part of reprint #320 for $2.
