Tips for Responding to the Media:

Ten Tips for Calling In to Radio Talk Shows or Talking with the Print or Broadcast News Media

1.  Focus on three main points or ideas, and present these important points first.  Steer the conversation toward those points if the interviewer detours you. Use bridging:  "Yes, and what's also important is ..." ~ "No, but let me explain..." ~ "Maybe, but it's important to understand that ..." ~ "I don't know, but what I do know is ..."

2.  If you only have time to make one key point, which is often the case, what would it be?  That  is your anchor.  Get to your anchor quickly without beating around the bush.  Repeat this keymessage during the conversation if possible.  Use flagging:  "The real issue here is..." ~ "If you only remember one thing, remember this..." ~ "I want to remind your listeners/audience that..."

3.  Cite positive trends relating to the social perception and increasing number of mothers at home (substantiate by relevant statistics; see resources in item 9).  Remember the needs of children aswell as mothers in your statements.

4.  Avoid negative statements.  Turn the thought to a positive observation, trend, concept, etc. In your exchange with an interviewer or working mother taking a stance against yours, find areas of agreement and point those out.  Refuse to be quoted as evidence of the "Mommy War."

5.  Sound bites should be brief and punchy (eight to ten seconds).  They should be attention-getting and memorable:  use humor, anecdotes, analogies and personal experiences.

6.  Decide in advance what you are not going to say and stick to your decision.  Do not assume that anything you say is "off the record."  If you don't want to see it quoted in print or on the air, don't say it.

7.  Return a reporter's phone call the same day; many are on tight deadlines.  If you have prior notice of an interview, anticipate the questions you will be asked.

8.  If participating in a media interview, it helps to restate the question in your response to give the interviewer a complete quotable sentence.

9.  If appropriate, please feel free to mention Mothers At Home/Welcome Home as a resource for mothers, including our number 866/352-1075 for a free information packet on FAHN/WH.  Feel free to direct media personnel to contact the Family and Home Network Public Relations Department at 703-866-4164.

10.  Use good communication skills.  Be confident, energetic, and sincere.  Relax, and have fun!
